Admission Procedure
Introduction
The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It provides flexible learning opportunities for students who wish to complete their secondary (10th) and senior secondary (12th) education through open and distance learning (ODL). NIOS also offers vocational courses and bridge programs for skill development.
Admissions are conducted online through the official NIOS website and are available throughout the year in two sessions:
Block 1 (April-May Exams) – Admissions open from March to September.
Block 2 (October-November Exams) – Admissions open from September to March.
Eligibility Criteria
For Secondary Course (Class 10th)
Must have completed 8th grade from a recognized school.
Minimum age: 14 years.
For Senior Secondary Course (Class 12th)
Must have completed 10th grade (Secondary) from a recognized board.
Minimum age: 15 years.
For Vocational & Bridge Courses
Eligibility varies based on the course.
Admission Process
Step 1: Online Registration
Visit the official NIOS website: www.nios.ac.in.
Click on “Register for Admission” and choose the desired course.
Step 2: Fill the Application Form
Enter personal details, educational qualifications, and preferred study center.
Choose the subjects for the selected course.
Step 3: Upload Documents
Required documents (scanned copies):
Passport-size photograph
Aadhaar card or valid ID proof
Previous academic certificates (8th/10th mark sheet)
Category certificate (if applicable, for SC/ST/OBC/Divyang candidates)
Step 4: Pay the Fees
Fees can be paid online (credit/debit card, UPI, net banking).
Fees vary by course and category.
Step 5: Confirmation & Study Materials
After payment, candidates receive a confirmation email/SMS.
Study materials are available online and through postal delivery.
Examination & Certification
Students must submit Tutor Marked Assignments (TMA) before exams.
Exams are conducted twice a year (April-May & October-November).
Results are published on the NIOS website, and certificates are issued after passing.

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) formerly known as National Open School (NOS) was established in November,1989.
